The University of Maine saw approximately 1,000 students and alumni serve in World War I and 3,900 serve in World War II. Both wars had a strong effect on the university and its students; the desire to honor those who had served and to memorialize those who had died led to various activities on campus. Sylvia Tibbetts was born in Dexter, Maine, on Sept. 2,1902. She graduated from the University of Maine in 1926, majoring in mathematics. She married George Dunkley in 1928 and they operated Dunkan Beach in Windham, N.H. until the mid-1960s. Sylvia Dunkley died on Aug. 8, 1990. From the description of Scrapbook, 1921-1924 / Sylvia E.
